This week, our Motion Graphics Artist, Linda Heffler writes a guest blog about how she and her team created the STEM superhero characters for our computer science curriculum. Read Linda’s blog to meet Jet, Levity, Nova, and Quake, and learn about how they were created!

We’d like to introduce you to our team of STEM superheroes: The Resolvers! The Resolvers began with a simple concept: helping others and promoting justice using a cartoon and comic book style approach to appeal to younger audiences.
Next was deciding what powers each hero would have and how this would be emphasized in their design. This includes super speed for Jet, the blue hero who runs with tall boots, super strength for Quake in red, with powerful gloves, and super smarts for Levity in yellow, floating in the air from her headband.
Our fourth character, Nova, is a hero in training who also functions as an avatar for students in an interactive game that’s woven into our curriculum. They learn to solve puzzles and problem using resources stored in their infinite backpack to become a hero too.
Each character’s concept was sketched to capitalize on their powers, which also reflect abilities the students will learn throughout the lessons. For example, Quake is powerful and strong like the technology she uses in her everyday life. The Resolvers help with STEM lessons by pointing out key points or helping with tough problems. They stand as a reminder that heroes are all around us, and anyone can be their own hero.
